Beverage can manufacturers support a net zero emission strategy

The Canners Association (CMI) and its members, including aluminum beverage can manufacturers and can board manufacturers, have approved the Mission Possible Partnership (MPP) transformation strategy to achieve a net zero, 1.5 ° C aligned aluminum industry. This reflects the industry's commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of raw aluminum used in beverage cans and contributing to addressing climate change.

Since the 1990s, the carbon footprint of aluminum beverage cans in North America has decreased by nearly half, and the MPP strategy is expected to further reduce the carbon footprint by reducing the carbon content of the raw aluminum used in beverage cans.

Achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions and limiting global warming to 1.5 ° C by 2050 will require various actions, including the use of new technologies, decarbonization of power supply, and improving material and product efficiency. The MPP aluminum transformation strategy provides an actionable and achievable plan.

CMI members who support this strategy recognize the importance of limiting global warming to within 1.5 ° C and agree that swift action should be taken to support this transformation.

Increasing the recycling content of aluminum beverage cans is another way to reduce carbon footprint. The average recycling content in the United States has reached 73%, which is the highest among all beverage containers. The industry aims to increase this proportion by achieving the recycling rate targets set by CMI and its members. The goal is to achieve a recovery rate of 70% by 2030, 80% by 2040, and 90% by 2050. CMI's aluminum beverage can recycling primer and roadmap outline how to achieve these goals.

Scott Breen, Vice President of Sustainable Development at CMI, stated that their strategy involves two parallel paths to reduce the carbon footprint of aluminum beverage cans: reducing the carbon footprint of raw aluminum used and increasing the recycling rate of used beverage cans to increase the recycling content in the cans.
